Can I Replace a One-Piece Door With a Sectional Door? |

one-piece garage doorsThe one-piece garage doors that are seen every once in a while were once the norm. That doesn’t necessarily mean they are rare, they are just not as common in the United States as they once were. One-piece garage doors were at one time the only style available. But over the last 50 years the sectional garage door has become the standard whereas the one-piece is really more of a novelty. It is primarily used for smaller garages that haven’t been updated or because the style matches the classic, more traditional architecture and style of the house.
For homeowners who may have purchased a home with a garage that has a one-piece door, the common question among them is whether or not that door can be swapped out for a more modern sectional door. The short answer is yes, it certainly can be. For those who may be unaware, the one-piece garage door is essentially a single piece of wood that is rigid throughout the door’s entire width and height. One-piece doors that are attached to an automatic opener system swing up and down in a single piece when opening and closing. Sectional garage doorsThese doors swing out rather far when they’re in the opening and closing process which some people find somewhat unattractive and inefficient. Sectional garage doors on the other hand are comprised of three or four individual panels or sections that are attached to one another with hinges and which slide up and down on tracks for a smoother looking opening/closing motion. Sectional doors hug the contours of the tracks much tighter. Garage Door styleWhen it comes to style, whether a homeowner chooses to go with a one-piece door or a sectional door for the garage is of course a matter of personal taste. As stated earlier, one-piece doors have a very classic, traditional look which some people prefer over the more contemporary sectional doors. And whereas sectional doors use heavy duty torsion springs in their lift mechanisms, one-piece doors use tension springs on both sides of the door. This is actually one advantage of having a one-piece door since tension springs are much easier and less expensive to replace.
There are, however, several disadvantages to having a one-piece door. One is that since they are generally so much heavier than sectional doors they are really only made from wood. One-piece doors made of steel would be far too heavy for any garage door opening system. Another disadvantage is that one-piece doors succumb to the stresses inherent to garage doors much more quickly than sectional doors. The weight on a sectional door is distributed more evenly than it is in a one-piece so a sectional is simply going to have a longer life span.
This all points to the fact that when it comes to the automatic garage door opener systems, sectional doors are much more energy efficient.
