The debate on choosing what to eat after a workout is very dependent on what your goals are. It varies on if you’re looking to gain muscle, lose fat, or maintain your figure how it is. Regardless of what your goals are, you should always have a post-workout food. It’s pretty simple. A good rule of thumb is to avoid foods you already know aren’t the best for you. You have to pick a meal or snack with intention after a good workout or else your hard work will not be as meaningful. If you chose not to eat something within an hour after a workout, you are depriving your body of nutrients it needs to become muscle or help shed fat. The body needs to be replenished after a good workout. When you chose to eat a meal but are choosing something you know may not be very healthy, you are choosing to cancel out the workout you have done. Stay aware of what you pick to eat. Avoid any added sugars, deep fried foods, or anything with lots of sodium. An average healthy diet consists mostly of veggies and fruit, then breads or rice, dairy, and a meat. Even if you are in the gym consistently 3-4 times a week but are making poor food choices, you won’t get the results you want. Those goals will be harder to attain because you can’t choose to only eat ice cream and expect a strong core or strong upper body. It is all about good decision making and being aware of what your goals are and what small things you can do to get there.
